The Scorpion Detector Test Equipment is a unique, functional remote smoke detector test system for aspirating smoke detection (ASD) and smoke detectors. It addresses long-standing challenges associated with traditional testing, which is often impractical, prone to contaminating systems, and lacks repeatability. This system offers a solution that improves compliance with industry codes and standards while delivering significant time, cost, and disruption savings.

The system operates by introducing an approved, benign, and non-contaminating test particulate in a controlled and repeatable manner. Permanently positioned at the end of a pipe run or within a smoke detector, Scorpion records its activation moment and the subsequent alarm signal. This allows for the precise measurement of “transport time,” which is then compared against commissioning records and previous tests to continuously assess the integrity and performance of the aspirating system.

Significant benefits include substantial time savings from improved accessibility, eradicating the need for physical access equipment, and facilitating sequential testing of multiple units from a single location. This minimises or eliminates the need for out-of-hours working. The system ensures a consistent stimulus for reliable testing throughout its lifetime and is approved by world-leading detector manufacturers.

Scorpion offers an adjustable smoke time and a transport time function, capable of performing over 240 tests per unit. It is suitable for various ASD technologies and pipe runs up to 100 metres, with the capacity to connect up to eight Scorpion heads to a single control panel. This provides flexibility for both retrofit and new installations.

Its applications are diverse, proving particularly invaluable in dangerous, hard-to-access, or continuously operational environments. These include lift shafts, 24/7 public spaces like airports, restricted access premises such as prisons, and large manufacturing plants or warehouses, where safety and efficiency are paramount.
