Description

The Li-ion Tamer GEN 3 system provides an early warning mechanism for lithium-ion battery failures by detecting electrolyte solvent vapours released during the off-gassing phase. This allows for timely investigation and mitigation, preventing potentially catastrophic thermal runaway. The system is calibration-free, offers an extended product lifetime, and is compatible with all lithium-ion battery chemistries and form factors, ensuring easy installation.

The complete system comprises monitoring sensors, referencing sensors, hubs, power and network switches, and at least one Li-ion Tamer Controller. Hubs are crucial for power distribution and CAN bus communications, acting as the connection point for sensors in a daisy-chain configuration. Each hub is capable of accepting a maximum of 12 sensors and requires a terminator to complete the CAN bus circuit.

Two types of hubs are available to suit different system requirements. The Li-ion Tamer Hub, Direct Power, is powered by a 12V DC supply and is primarily used for smaller systems. For larger installations, the Li-ion Tamer Hub, PoE (Power over Ethernet), is more suitable as it can be powered by a 48V DC PoE Ethernet switch, simplifying power provision when multiple hubs are deployed.

The daisy-chain CAN bus communication architecture, involving sensors, hubs, and terminators, simplifies installation by minimising cabling. The Direct Power hub connects a single sensor chain, drawing power from a 12V DC terminal block. In contrast, the PoE hub can connect up to two sensor chains and receives its power directly from an Ethernet switch.
