Knowledge BaseDescription
The discontinued VESDA VLC Aspirating Smoke Detector, now replaced by the VESDA-E VEP, was engineered for compact single environments with limited space. It combined a modified aspirator with proven VESDA VLP technology in a compact unit, offering absolute smoke detection and a wide sensitivity range suitable for small-area applications.
VLC versions included Relay Only (RO) and VESDAnet (VN) for linking detectors and referencing. An Apollo XP95 variant offered direct protocol support, while a remote display module provided convenient status reporting and extra relays for the VN model, displaying current status in a separate location.
Operation involved a high-efficiency aspirator continuously drawing air through a pipe network into a central unit. After passing a flow sensor and dual-stage dust filter, the air entered a detection chamber. Here, a laser light source and unique sensor configuration detected smoke by light scatter, ensuring optimal response to various smoke types.
The system monitored and logged all alarms, service, and fault events with time and date stamps, reporting via simple relay connections or the advanced VESDAnet for VN models. Non-serviceable components were protected internally, and a five-LED display on the front cover provided clear status indication, including Fire, Pre-alarm, Fault, OK, and Reset/Isolate.
Approved by VdS and LPCB, the VESDA VLC bore the CE mark and complied with EN54-20 standards for EU use. Its compact design (225x225x85mm), low power consumption, and support for sampling networks up to 800m² made it well-suited for its intended small-area applications.
