Knowledge BaseDescription
The VESDA VLS Aspirating Smoke Detector, now discontinued and superseded by the VESDA-E VES, was an advanced system providing individual pipe identification. Evolving from the standard VESDA VLP, the VLS integrated a valve mechanism within its inlet manifold and sophisticated software to precisely control airflow from four distinct pipes. Eurofyre remains a resource for spare parts, servicing, and training for this model.
Operationally, the VLS drew air from all active sectors. Upon reaching an Adaptive Scan Threshold, it performed a rapid scan of each pipe to pinpoint the smoke source. If multiple pipes indicated smoke, the sector with the highest concentration became the First Alarm Sector (FAS). Post-Fast Scan, the system maintained close monitoring of all four pipes to track fire growth and ensure continuous protection, offering four programmable alarm levels: Alert, Action, Fire 1, and Fire 2, with settable sensitivities per sector.
The VLS featured a display with a bar graph for smoke levels and alarm thresholds, alongside an LED for FAS indication. It supported options for 7 or 12 programmable relay termination cards and utilised VESDAnet™, a robust bi-directional communication network for transmitting status, alarms, and fault events, ensuring reliable system operation and centralised programming.
Software enhancements included Referencing and AutoLearn™ functions. Referencing compensated for external environmental pollution, preventing false alarms, while AutoLearn automatically set optimal alarm thresholds based on ambient conditions during commissioning. The VESDA VLS was VdS approved, CE marked, and complied with EN54-20 standards.
Weighing 4.0kg and operating on 18–30Vdc, the detector typically covered up to 2000m². Its sampling network facilitated an aggregate pipe length of 200m, with alarm sensitivity from 0.005%–20% obs/m.
