A castle is a large building, typically constructed in the medieval period, used to protect individuals against attack using towers, thick walls, battlements and a moat. While this isn’t the case today, castles remain a significant part of history and need to be protected against fire.

There are many castles located in the UK today, all of which are popular tourist destinations, for example:

The Importance of a Reliable Fire Alarm System in Castles

Due to the nature and history of castles, fast and accurate fire detection must be in place to mitigate fire risks and ensure historical landmarks remain safe. Not only this, but castles are popular tourist destinations and are mostly open to the public, meaning if a fire is not detected quickly, lives are put at risk.

What are the Challenges in Protecting Castles From Fire?

There are many challenges in protecting castles for fire, including:

  • The structure of the building
    Castles are very old and, therefore, need to be looked after. Deconstructing the building to install a new fire alarm system puts the castle at risk of damage which could have a huge impact on the integrity of the structure.
  • Down time
    As many castles are popular tourist destinations, the closure time needed to install new fire alarm systems could put profits at a loss and also ruin experiences for tourists.

What is the Solution?

Wi-Fyre is the perfect solution in protecting castles against fire as it allows wireless fire detection devices to integrate seamlessly with a hardwired fire detection system. This means that a number of different detection types can be used to ensure that suitable protection is provided, with minimal impact on the property.

With a hybrid fire alarm system, wireless devices can be installed in areas where cables would cause disruption to the integrity or aesthetics of the building, while hardwired traditional type detectors can be used where necessary. As well as this, other detection types such as aspirating smoke detection can be used where traditional type detection may be ineffective – i.e. areas with high ceilings or particularly voluminous areas.

Wi-Fyre

Wi-Fyre wireless field devices connect to the fire alarm control panel via a Wi-Fyre Transponder. The transponder is connected via a compatible interface module which is installed into the fire alarm wiring. Each transponder is able to communicate with up to 30 mixed field devices, including smoke and heat detectors; manual call points; sounders and interfaces.

A wireless survey must be conducted using the Wi-Fyre survey head to ensure that the signal between the transponder and connected device is strong enough to provide reliable and efficient detection.

Wireless detectors is available with six, user-selectable modes of operation to ensure increased compatibility with a range of different detection types takes place:

  • Conventional
  • Addressable (Collective)
  • ProFyre 2-Wire Addressable
  • ProFyre Addressable
  • Standalone
  • Reflective
