FyreLine Resettable Linear Heat Detection for Storage Racks

11 mins read

Storage racking provides organised, high-density shelving for warehouses, distribution centres and manufacturing sites. Businesses use these systems to hold pallets, boxed goods, components and finished products in a compact footprint. Racking can run several levels high, which helps increase capacity without expanding the building. The items stored can range from packaged food and consumer goods to electrical equipment, textiles and spare parts. Many facilities also use racking for irregular or bulky items that cannot sit on standard shelving. These structures support fast picking, efficient stock rotation and safer handling in busy storage environments.

Risks

Storage racks can present a number of unique fire risks. Some of these include:

Electrical faults
Chargers, conveyor systems and lighting can overheat or arc, which can ignite nearby packaging or dust.
Blocked airflow
Tightly packed or damaged stock can trap heat within rack bays and allow a small issue to develop into a fire.
Mechanical damage
Forklift impacts or collisions can harm wiring or electrical equipment inside or around the racking, creating hidden ignition points.
Overloading
Excess weight can distort shelves and restrict ventilation, which increases the chance of heat build up around stored goods.
Poor housekeeping
Loose packaging, waste and debris in aisles or rack levels can provide fuel and help a fire spread quickly.

Challenges

Storage racks also create a number of challenges when it comes to designing a suitable fire detection solution:

Limited access
Narrow aisles and high rack levels make it difficult to place and maintain traditional point detectors.
Stratification
Heat and smoke can collect at different heights, which can delay activation of ceiling mounted systems.
Obstructed airflow
Dense stock and varied packaging can restrict movement of smoke, which affects detector response times.
Changing layouts
Racking plans often change as storage needs evolve, which can disrupt detector coverage if the system is not flexible.
Environmental conditions
Dust, temperature changes and mechanical vibration can affect some detectors, which makes consistent performance harder to achieve.

FyreLine Resettable

FyreLine Resettable is a linear heat detection system designed to give reliable heat sensing along the full length of a storage area. The cable reacts to rising temperatures and sends an alarm when it reaches a set point, which helps teams identify overheating before a fire develops.

Unlike single point detectors, it monitors every part of the rack run, including narrow gaps and high levels where heat can build up unnoticed. The cable returns to normal after the area cools, which removes the need for replacement after minor incidents or testing. This makes the system practical for warehouses that need consistent protection with low ongoing maintenance.

Approvals

EN54-22 approval confirms that FyreLine Resettable meets the required performance standards for linear heat detection in life safety systems. The certification shows that the cable responds consistently at its rated temperature, maintains stability in varied operating conditions and performs reliably across its full length. This gives operators confidence that the system will activate as expected in real storage environments and supports its use as part of an approved fire detection strategy.

UL-521 approval shows that FyreLine Resettable meets the recognised North American standard for heat detectors. The testing confirms that the cable responds accurately at its alarm temperature, withstands environmental stress and maintains reliable performance over time. This certification supports its use in commercial and industrial fire detection systems where proven, independently tested equipment is required.

Design Considerations

Controller Placement

The FyreLine Resettable controller monitors the heat sensing cable, provides alarm and fault outputs and gives clear status information to fire panels and site staff.

The best placement for the FyreLine Resettable controller is in an accessible location such as a plant room, fire control point or staffed office. It should sit where teams can view status information, respond to alarms and carry out routine checks without entering storage areas or interrupting warehouse activity.

Cable Placement

The linear heat detection cable senses temperature along its entire length, which allows it to monitor areas where point detectors cannot operate effectively. The cable contains heat sensitive materials that trigger an alarm when they reach the set temperature, giving a fast response in confined or obstructed spaces.

For storage racks, the best placement is along the rack beams or within the rack framework where heat is most likely to build up. Positioning the cable on the underside of beam levels or close to potential ignition sources helps ensure early activation. Careful routing avoids areas where mechanical damage could occur while still keeping the cable close enough to detect rising heat quickly.

Mounting Clips

P-Clips provide a secure and cushioned mounting point for FyreLine Resettable LHD cables. They are best placed at regular intervals along the cable route. Their flexible grip helps prevent cable damage while maintaining firm support.

J-Clips are used to securely fix FyreLine Resettable LHD cables in place. They should be installed at regular intervals along the cable route to maintain proper positioning and tension. Placement should avoid contact with sharp edges.

EOL Placement

The end of line unit should sit at the far end of the heat detection cable run where the system needs to confirm continuity and stable operation. The best placement is in an accessible but protected spot at the end of a rack aisle or service corridor. This keeps the unit easy to reach for inspection while reducing the chance of accidental damage during daily warehouse activity.

Typical Wiring Diagram

Addressable wiring links the controller and heat detection cable to the fire panel using circuits that identify each device on the system. This allows the panel to show the exact location of an alarm or fault. The wiring follows standard fire system practices and supports clear, reliable communication between the controller and the panel.

Conventional wiring connects the FyreLine Resettable controller to the fire panel through a standard zone circuit. The controller sends alarm and fault signals along a simple two core cable, which the panel interprets as activity on that zone. This approach is easy to install and suits sites using non-addressable fire systems.
