Talentum IR2 Flame Detector for Laboratories

8 mins read

Laboratories are controlled environments used for scientific investigation, testing and product development. They support a wide range of work including chemical analysis, pharmaceutical research, biological studies and materials testing. Universities, hospitals, industrial manufacturers and research organisations all rely on laboratory facilities to develop new products, analyse substances and carry out controlled experiments.

Laboratory environments contain specialist equipment, chemicals and analytical instruments that support highly precise work. Experiments often take place in controlled conditions using fume cupboards, extraction systems and sensitive measurement devices. These spaces must remain safe for staff while also protecting expensive equipment and valuable research data.

Because laboratories handle potentially hazardous materials and processes, reliable fire detection is essential. Detection systems must provide early warning so staff can respond quickly and protect both personnel and critical research activity.

Risks

Flammable liquids
Many laboratories store and use solvents, alcohols and fuels during experiments and cleaning processes. These substances can ignite easily if exposed to a spark or flame.
Open flames
Bunsen burners and other heating equipment introduce ignition sources that may ignite vapours or nearby combustible materials.
Electrical equipment
Analytical instruments, power supplies and charging devices increase electrical load and create the potential for overheating or electrical faults.
Chemical reactions
Some laboratory reactions generate heat or produce flammable vapours that may ignite if not carefully controlled.
Combustible materials
Paper wipes, packaging and laboratory supplies can contribute fuel to a developing fire.

Challenges

Ventilated environments
Fume cupboards and air extraction systems remove smoke quickly, which can delay detection by conventional smoke detectors.
Clean air conditions
Laboratories often maintain controlled environments where early fire stages may produce very little visible smoke.
Environmental interference
Steam, vapours or airborne particles may interfere with some detection technologies and increase the likelihood of nuisance alarms.
Obstructed coverage
Laboratory benches, cabinets and equipment can block the line of sight of detection devices.
Rapid fire development
Fires involving flammable liquids or gases can develop quickly and produce open flame before significant smoke is present.

Laboratory Flame Detection

Flame detectors identify the radiation emitted by flames rather than relying on smoke or heat. This allows earlier detection in environments where ventilation systems remove smoke before it reaches conventional detectors.

In laboratories, flame detection can provide rapid identification of fires. These detectors monitor a defined field of view and analyse flame radiation patterns to determine whether a real fire is present.

Because flame detectors respond directly to flame signatures, they can provide faster warning in situations where smoke detection alone may respond slowly.

Talentum Flame Detection Solutions

Talentum Flame Detectors

The Talentum range from FFE provides specialised flame detection for environments where rapid identification of fire is critical. The range includes several detector types designed to recognise different flame characteristics and environmental conditions.

These detectors use infrared and ultraviolet sensing technologies that allow them to distinguish genuine flames from non fire sources such as sunlight reflections, hot surfaces or electrical interference. The range is designed for industrial, research and hazardous environments where conventional detection methods may not respond quickly enough.

Typical applications include laboratories, chemical processing facilities, fuel storage areas and manufacturing environments where flammable substances are present.

Talentum IR2 Flame Detector

The Talentum IR2 Flame Detector uses dual infrared sensing to identify the unique radiation patterns produced by flames. Two sensors monitor different infrared wavelengths and analyse the characteristic flicker frequency associated with fire.

This approach allows the detector to distinguish genuine flames from other radiation sources such as sunlight reflections or hot equipment. The device is sensitive to the infrared flicker produced by flames between 1 and 15 Hz, enabling early detection of fires involving hydrocarbon fuels or hydrogen.

Advanced filtering and signal processing help maintain stable operation in challenging environments where heat sources or background radiation could otherwise cause false alarms. The detector is also designed to continue operating even if the optical window becomes partially contaminated by dust, oil, moisture or other environmental deposits.

These characteristics make the Talentum IR2 suitable for laboratory environments where rapid flame detection may be required.

Design Considerations

Correct placement of flame detectors is important for effective operation in laboratory environments. The detector should have a clear field of view across areas where ignition sources or flammable materials are present.

Work benches, chemical storage areas and equipment used for heating or reactions are common locations where ignition may occur. Detectors should therefore be positioned to monitor these areas while avoiding obstructions that could block the detector’s field of view.

Laboratory ventilation systems should also be considered when designing detection coverage. While ventilation may remove smoke quickly, flame detectors must still maintain clear visibility of the protected area in order to respond effectively.

Proper system design ensures that flame detectors can identify fires quickly and provide early warning to laboratory personnel.
